8 volumes, 8vo. Contemporary brown leather with gilt border and diamond tooled pattern to front and back: raised bands, decorative gilt and black author and volume title stamps to spine. Marbled endpapers and edges. Illustrated with engravings and devices throughout. Originally printed 1839 – 1841. This set is undated; circa 1841 – 1861. Charles Knight’s editions “played an important part in how the Victorian population thought about and constructed Shakespeare” (Goodman). Of note is the spelling of Shakespeare’s name in the Knight edition. In the Romantic and Victorian eras “Shakspere” became more widely adopted as Knight has used here.
